Do you believe that a 1-log kill for trophozoites and stasis for cysts are appropriate acceptance criteria for testing solutions when challenged with Acanthamoeba?

1. If not, what acceptance criteria would you recommend?

2. Would the criteria change if the testing was done in the presence of a lens?

Given the need to develop a standardized protocol for disinfection efficacy testing, what are the advantages and disadvantages of the following:

a. Growth method for trophozoites (i.e., axenic or bacterized) and

b. Encystment methods (e.g., Heff’s, Beattie, time, starvation, others)?  

For disinfection efficacy testing against Acanthamoeba,

1. Is ATCC 50370 A. castellanii the appropriate strain for testing?

2. What other or additional strains from ATCC would you recommend?

3. Should additional species of Acanthamoeba (from ATCC) be included?

4. If so, which additional species should be included?

Do you believe that the current panel of pathogens is adequate to determine disinfection efficacy for contact lens care products?

a. If not, what pathogens would you change or recommend adding to the panel?  

b. If there is more than one, in what order would you prioritize them?

c.  If you believe that pathogens should be added to the panel, what test methods would be appropriate for these chosen pathogens?

d.  Should the strains of pathogens currently listed  on the panel be modified?
